What really causes windshields to crack beyond repair in Arizona, and what can I do to to prevent it. This is a frequently asked question amongst Arizona residents. Arizona, Florida, and a few other states seem to be the windshield replacement capitals of the nation….but why? As with most answers, its not a one liner that can easily explain it.

Typical chip quickly turning in to a crack that will need replacement rather than simple repair.

Arizona like all other states experiences Summer and Winter. Both seasons produce extremes that put stress on your windshield, but why so much in AZ? Well, first of all, our summers are hot, really, r-e-a-l-l-y hot. This heat causes your auto glass to expand to it’s manufacturing limits. This of course does not cause the windshield to crack, but it gets is ready to. What do we need next? Try driving down any highway in Phoenix during the summer with your windshield already stressed from the extreme heat and you will notice something. All of your car windows are closed and your A/C is on MAX. So let’s see, it’s 117F degrees outside and you’re a nice comfy 70F inside. You already have two polar opposites working against each others and then you notice it. You’ve driven just a bit too close to a rock landscaping truck in front of you. He’s completely oblivious to the rocks trickling off of his canvas top and from underneath it as well. But regardless, on bounces off the highway and smack into your windshield. At first you think, oh snap! but then you see it’s just a small chip with a tiny crack and you go on to your merry way to work. It got hotter outside while you were in your nice comfy office and the crack has nearly left your mind. You figure you’ll fix it on the weekend or soon enough when you have time. On the way home, your back on the highway and your cruisin’ about 70mph and you hit a pot hole. Crraaak! your chipped windshield just spread across most of the window and now your thinking… great, now I have to get it replaced.

This scenario is all too familiar to most people living here in the Valley of the Sun. The heat, the rock trucks, the rocks being kicked up on the roadways among many other unique variables that make living in phoenix without a cracked windshield for any length of time unlikely. Here are the main causes fairly unique to Phoenix, Tucson and surrounding cities:

Rocks on the roadways from landscaping trucks

Intense summer heat

Dust Storms & Dust devils (carry small rocks)

Large Hail Storms

Dirt roads and dirt & gravel driveways

Construction vehicles carrying earth materials

Mean kids with high powered BB guns

Some preventive measures that you can take include:

Fix small chips and cracks immediately before they spread

Avoid driving to close behind large trucks that may drop material onto the road

Avoid Driving behind large vehicles that may kick up rocks behind them

Keep your vehicle in covered parking

Pull over in a shletered area during a hail or dust storm.

Do not attempt to drive through dust devils

Be nice to kids with BB guns

Seriously, please drive safely and make sure that your vehicles are covered with a simple glass policy from your insurance carrier. If you sustain any damage, immediately seek out a qualified, reputable Auto Glass Shop that can safely service your vehicle.
